“This is a lifetime experience.” - @FALLGIRL2499

paramount tapped ihc to bring scrooge's victorian era office to sdcc for their new film ebenezer.

IHC transformed a high-traffic location in the heart of SDCC into a large-scale, living diorama of Scrooge’s Victorian-era office, complete with a snow-covered exterior and richly detailed interiors that recreated the world of Ebenezer through immersive theatrical performances and evolving day-to-night moments.

The activation culminated in a once-in-a-lifetime fan moment: a surprise appearance from Johnny Depp, with a cast of 12 actors bringing the experience to life. Paid and earned creators, including Johnny Depp superfans dressed as his iconic characters, were strategically positioned to capture and amplify the moment.

The result was a dual-purpose activation that functioned as both a high-impact public spectacle, entertaining thousands of passing convention-goers without requiring them to wait in line, and a strategic content engine that provided a dedicated environment for press and creator content capture.

The Build

Over six days, we transformed a building in the San Diego Gaslamp Quarter into a faithful recreation of Scrooge & Marley's Victornia-era shop. We replaced the existing awning, doors, and windows of our facade to fully immerse guests in the world of the upcoming film and bring some Christmas spirit to SDCC.

Exterior Details

The exterior came to life with custom scenic details, including an animated Marley door knocker, haunted shutters, a swinging chandelier, and a supernatural clock that triggered cinematic moments. A perched animated crow and swinging Scrooge & Marley storefront sign added more dynamic, story-driven moments.

Snowfall and sound design enhanced the Victorian winter, building suspense for key narrative moments. As night fell, the experience transformed into a supernatural spectacle with ghostly apparitions, low-hanging fog, flickering candlelight, and illuminated exterior ice bringing the haunted Victorian setting to life.

Interior Details

The interior featured a richly detailed set design, including Scrooge’s desk, a fireplace, and carefully curated details including various props sourced directly from the film that made the space feel full of life.

Johnny Depp SUrprise

For a mega surprise, Johnny Depp into character to rain his disdain for cheer upon SDCC attendees. Appearing in full costume and makeup, Johnny interacted with guests through live microphone-amplified commentary. To bring the world of Ebenezer to life beyond the main performance, a robust cast of Victorian-era characters interacted with Johnny and passerbyers throughout the day.

CREATOR amplification

We developed a creator strategy built around affinity creators connected to Johnny Depp’s iconic characters, alongside general convention goers who could extend the story beyond the SDCC news cycle.

In addition to creators, we strategically placed cosplayers with larger followings who were themselves Johnny Depp superfans, positioning them to be part of the surprise moment that ultimately went viral.
