JACK BEATS: Green Slime & Dope Tracks

JACK BEATS, the sick UK duo made up of one kid from Scratch Perverts and one kid from Mixologists, is coming to LA next month to play at HARD fest. If you have not been under a shell for the past year, you've definitely heard their frequently played dope track GET DOWN. In anticipation, we had to get a hold of them! Check out the interview below...

How do you manage your time between Jack Beats together and the projects that you do separately (Scratch Perverts and Mixologists)?

Haha…Honest truth is it’s not easy - but we cope! Things have moved so quickly for us in the last year so we have to manage all our time really efficiently. Because the scratch perverts diary is so full it means it doesn’t offer up the space to allow us both to play the gigs for the moment - though there will be more shows over time where we will perform together - the first of these being Hardfest in LA in August, which we’re super excited about!

In the past you’ve sited hip hop and jungle as huge influencers for you. What’s been in your minds as of late when coming up with tracks?

We’re both music heads who have really broad tastes - so there’s no easy answer to this one. Our roots do sort of lie in Hip hop and jungle, as well as 90’s rave and elements of those music’s still play a part a part in what we do musically right now - but heavier influence for us currently comes from the production values of minimal stuff and techno music, coupled with the raw energy and weight of Dubstep.

Do you see a resurgence happening with dubstep on a larger scale?

We’re not sure of resurgence as such ,it’s probably too early for that really. The genre itself is expanding and spreading throughout the world right now. Dubstep is a young music, which is still establishing itself in many aspects respects, and seems to only get bigger and better over time!

When can we expect to see the release date for your EP/single?

The EP is out July 20th on Cheap Thrills.

Who are some of the people you’re currently working with as far as remixes, etc.?

We’ve just finished remixes for Blaqstarr & Diplo's 'Get Off' and Florence & The Machine's 'Drumming', which will be both be out soon. We've also just remixed a band called Hockey, one for our friend Fake Blood for his track 'Mars', and we've just started work on a remixing the next La Roux single which is super exciting.

Do you feel that certain cities/countries are more receptive to your sound (that’s been referred to as fidget/wobbly/fun) than others?

The sound seems to have done well all over the place so far, mainly down to the fact that the blogs have been spreading the word and supporting us since the beginning! So far our fanbase strongholds seem to be the U.S, Australia and U.K, though we like to think our style goes a little beyond the boundaries of whatever genre we are pigeon holed in and beyond any borders. We just make music and it’s funny to hear people try to describe it, be it fidgit, fun or wobbly because our music isn’t any of that.

Did you really eat chicken feet in Hong Kong?

Yes. Always.

How do you separate the creative processes involved when creating music for your other endeavors and then together with this one? Do you have to put on a “different hat” so to speak when creating music for Jack Beats or does it all ebb and flow together?

It all really ‘ebbs and flows’ to be honest. The majority of our studio time in the last 2 years be it personal or together, has been spent working on Jack Beats related tracks.

Are there any necessities when you are creating music? I.e. drinks, food, other?

Haha - studio snacks (theres a long list of favorites!), and evening beers are essential to the creative process. We also drink a lot of tea also…
