BOYS NOIZE, aka Alex, is one of those rare gems with a completely recognizable, unique sound. You hear his tracks and you know it's him, even if you haven't heard them before! With his new album out, and that fab mixtape released the other day, we had to chat with him about his various projects, his methods, and what he posts on his twitter. Check out the interview below with BOYS NOIZE...
You just had your new record come out. Tell us about it (things you accomplished w/ the sound that are new on this record, themes you wanted to feature).
I think the new album starts where "OI OI Oi" ended. again, I did the music i can dj but I didn't really had a plan what I was going to make and even though I had ideas of a tracks I want to make, I couldn't work it out because when I'm in the studio I really work on something I do at the moment like starting with a beat I program on the drumashine or starting with a sample to build around. My ear actually tells me what to sound like.
You've established yourself as one of a handful of DJs with a recognizable sound. How did you go about accomplishing this when you first started to make Boys Noize music?
I'm really to say that everything kinda grew natural. The original idea of releasing my music was and is still to sell 1000 vinyl in a record shop for djs only. After some bigger djs started to play my records in 2004 2005 and 2006 more and more people got into this but when I started my label in '05 it wasnt something "hot" in the first place because my sound was just not the sound what djs played at that time. In my 10 years of djing I always tried to play something new, fresh and different to what all other djs were playing and I was always the guy that played a promo, a whitelabel and when the actuall release came out I stoped playing that tune. I'm kinda the same with my productions in a way, at least I try..
What's upcoming for some of your artists on Boysnoize Records?
There is a new Strip Steve EP incl 5 new tracks, Housemeister has some new incredible stuff and Djedjotronic is working on some jackin Techno tracks, as well. I m really happy with the artists on BNR becasue all of them have their own sound!
Do you have any plans for music vids or new merchandise related to Boys Noize or BNR that we should look for later this year?
Yes, we are finally gonna release some new t-shirts very soon! They look wicked !! On the video side: I'm not so sure if we gonna do a "real" video...for "oi oi oi" we did some Anti Videos and no one really got it haha. check out the video for " & Down" by Michael Maier. I think no one in the world has ever done a video like that. it s legendary ;)
There was a lot of talk on your twitter about computer problems/failure. What happened? How did you get it solved without losing all of your music?
Well, I actualy lost a lot of music after the crash of my hardrive but it was right after i gave out all my tracks for the mastering.
When you're on tour 24/7 how do choose the tracks you play in different cities?
Oh that s kinda easy. I always take so much music with me and playing a festival or a club are already 2 seperate things set wise. In the club I always try out new stuff plus being more experimental, whereas at a festival I play more of my own stuff..
What projects are you working on via Gonzales?
Right now I'm trying to finish the album I'm producing and co-writing for Gonzales. That's the most beautiful thing in my life right now and to be honest, it's like a dream come true working with such an incredible musician. It's like black and white come together! Also, I'm working with UK rapper Kano, I've been working on some stuff for Kelis & Black Eyed Peas. New tracks with Erol Alkan are coming out early 2010.
Over the past few years we've seen you blow up. And now the space is flooded with copycats and young kids trying to create the same excitement you did a couple years ago. Where do you see the scene going? And how are you finding inspiration these days?
To be honest, I dont really care about this because it s nothing new, you know ? It was always the thing that there are a hand full of guys to create something fresh at a certain time and then you'll find the copycats that jump on the same train. It was like this when the first Punk guys came up, 2 years later everyone was a punk or disco or minimal. So, for me I take a new motivation out of this to try something that is exciting in my ears and I was always the guy outside of any trend because I just can't understand producers who want to make a track like the one they just discovered..
There you have it boys and girls. Boys Noize is scheduled to play in LA on New Year's Eve this year...And, once again here's that mixtape from the other day:
