GLASS CANDY, the duo from Portland who has rocked everyone from the Coachella work to Haute Couture, will be in San Diego and LA in the next few days. With that in mind we had to chat with them about what they're doing, where they're going, and of course, where to catch them playing...
Please describe GLASS CANDY for our readers out there.
electronic fog with stardust sprinkled on top.
How did your music infiltrate into the fashion scene specifically CHANEL and CHLOE?
Karl Lagerfeld was really digging the BEATBOX LP and the AFTERDARK compilation. That triggered a lot of the runway shows last year using GLASS CANDY songs. Gucci, Diesel, Chloe, Chanel, Prada, etc... it was crazy. We don't have a publicist or a manager. They just came across it and just really liked the music. It has that really good pace for the runway...down tempo but lots of swagger. Chanel was really into what they called the visual aspect of the music
Where do you find inspirations for your tracks (Feeling Without Touching, for example)?
The music for feeling without touching kind of came out of us listening to the Supremes and the Ronnettes a lot last winter... Big open sound and really heavy claps. it's almost a motown melody. There isn't usually an obvious link between what makes us want to make a song and the final outcome of the song. it's really abstract and organic. We just kind of hit the studio with an open mind and don't fight it; Just go with what's working at that moment. We try not to analyze it too much. The lyrics always come out of meditation. That song in particular deals with the distorted perception of ourselves through the things we buy and surround ourselves with. everyone is building a cage or a nest. depending on how you look at it. that song is about trying to feel and experience life without having to buy or own anything.
How did you two meet and form GLASSCANDY? And how have you planned the different transitions GLASSCANDY has gone through musically the past couple years? We met in a grocery store Johnny was working in. That was in 1996. It took us three years to put out our first 7 inch. We were learning to play our instruments and didn't really understand how to record. We don't plan the transitions. They just come about naturally depending on what we're really feeling at the moment. The core of the group is always a heartbeat and a voice. everything else is subject to change. anything is a possibility. It's all pop music.
GLASS CANDY- Feeling Without Touching
What are your plans for the rest of the year? Touring? New album work?
We have four brand new songs coming out on the new Italians do it Better compilation in the fall. We are hard at work all summer for the new Glass Candy L "Body Work". It won't be done until around november. So, it's going to come out in January next year. We have about 20 beats we are working with. We're hitting a few parties in North America, and doing another month in Europe with Desire in October. in the meantime... the Geto Boys 12" is coming out in two weeks, and the feeling without touching ep will be out in september. we just finished the video with travis peterson. He shot it when we were on the west coast for Coachella.
When making sounds, what are examples of some movies/songs from yesteryear that may have influenced you?
We love everything. Diana Ross, Suicide, Shocking Blue, Olivia Newton John, Utfo, The Stooges, Fleetwood Mac, epmd, Bubsy Berkely, The Bee Gees, Lonnie liston Smith, etc... anything with a really strong beat and a visual vocal that sounds like air. for cinema... Our favorite composer is Kristopher Komeda. He did all the early Polanski films. Fearless Vampire Killers is still one of the best soundtracks of all time. John Carpenter is amazing, and we love Claudio Simonetti. The music in films is probably a more direct influence than the records we listen to. In terms of production, it's more like Eric Satie's idea of music being part of an installation. We want our music to be a backdrop for people's cars and bedrooms.
How do you plan for performances? Would you say they're pretty organized/thought out in advance in order to create a certain vibe or do you go with the flow?
We haven't practiced in about 6 years. We just record and then open the beat on stage and see what happens. There is a loose structure but adrenaline, alcohol, and the audience shape the songs more than we can control. Johnny edits the beats live while playing the synth, and Ida changes the lyrics every night. With electronic music, it's really easy to fall into a kind of stale or karoke state. we try and keep it as raw as possible to keep it fresh on stage. we stay open to whatever the audience wants to do too. We don't have a choreographed performance.
